Body of giant fish washed ashore
A decomposed body of a giant fish believed to be of whole family was
washed a shore at Vellai in Delft. It is about 40 feet in length and
nine to 10 feet in width. Thousands of people thronged to view the giant
fish. It started emanating stench. The people with the help of the Navy
chopped it into pieces and buried the fish.
VIPs delay bank opening
The opening of three Samurdhi Banks has been postponed twice due to
the inability of VIPs gracing the opening ceremony. Three Samurdhi banks
and office for Samurdhi officers were built at Puloly, Nelliyaddy and
Karaveddi.
Colombo Crime Branch to investigate jewellery theft
Investigations into the theft of gold jewellery at Tinnavelly
People's Bank has been referred to the Colombo Crime Investigation
branch from Kopay Police. An officer of the bank had been arrested and
remanded as suspect. Another officer of the bank was remanded for two
weeks on being produced before the Jaffna Magistrate.
School reopened
The Allai Pallai Tamil School that remained closed for the last six
year was reopened last week. The school is functioning with 25 children
from Grade one to five. Children of resettled families will be admitted
to the school when it is reopened for the third term.
Illegal migrants intercepted
Eighty three persons who set out in two mechanized fishing trawlers
to Australia were apprehended by the Navy about 15 miles off the
Trincomalee harbour.
They were from Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Kochchikade, Bulathsinhala,
Habarana, Balangoda and Kalpitty. They were handed over to Police for
further investigation.
Two students win schols to study abroad
Two students from Sr Patrick's College Jaffna won scholarships to
study in the Oxford University, London and in the Rajastan National
College of Technology in India. Sivapalan Selva Nithilan has won the
scholarship to study Physical Engineering. He won the bronze medal in
the 42nd Physical Olympiad contest. Jeyaratnam Joy Mathavan has won an
Indian government scholarship to study Electronic Engineering at the
National College of Technology in Rajastan.
Infection threatens dogs
A viral infection that kills domesticated dogs is spreading in
Jaffna. Dogs bred as pet animals have died vomiting blood.
Veterinary surgeons have advised the people to get dogs inoculated
against the virus.
Youth saved from drowning
A youth was saved from drowning by Irrigation Department officers.
The youth who ignored the warning displayed at Thondamanaru Sella
Sannathy Murugan Temple warning the people not to over step into
demarcated dangerous zone got into difficulties and was about to drown.
The officers of the Irrigation Department who saw the youth in peril
saved him from drowning. The youth was identified as Kanishkan, 22, of
Suthumalai Manipay. |
