None of the members of the Sri Lanka Medical Council will resign
under pressure, SLMC member Prof. Jayantha Jayawardane said.
Addressing the media yesterday at the SLMC office Prof. Jayawardane
said that the SLMC is dedicated to protect the public by assuring a
quality health service in the country according to the Medical
Ordinance. We are ready to face any other challenges or problems in
future.
"SLMC is facing three major problems regarding foreign doctors
registration, private medical faculty registration and the registrations
of overseas medical degree holders."
he said. Prof. Jayawardane also said that some parties are attempting
to force the SLMC to bend the rules and regulations to act contrary to
the Medical Ordinance. Dr. Lalantha Ranasighe, a member of the SLMC
expressed his views on important matters very boldly, cogently and
actively participated in them.
"An attempt had been made to physically harm Dr. Lalantha and his
family by throwing a hand grenade at his residence. Our former
President, Registrars were also attacked in the same manner.
"So this is not just a personal attack on a private individual but it
constitutes an attack on the most cherished and basic tenets of the Rule
of Law." he said.
Sri Lanka Medical Council(SLMC) requests the authorities to take
immediate legal action against those who attempted to bring physical
harm to Dr. Lalantha Ranasinghe, a member of the SLMC. SLMC President
Prof. Carlo Fonseka, Registrar N. J. Nonis and SLMC members participated
on the occasion.
