South West monsoon sets in

Occasional showers with fairly strong winds can be expected in the South West quarter of the country till September due to the activation of the South West monsoon, Meteorological Department Duty Forecaster Pabodini Karunapala said.

She said the Eastern and Uva Provinces will also experience showers, especially in the evenings. "After September, heavy showers will develop in the island during the evenings with the beginning of second inter-monsoon period," Karunapala said. She said Sri Lanka experiences two monsoons and two inter - monsoon periods. They are the first inter monsoon period (March - April), South West monsoon (May - September), second inter monsoon period (October - November) and North Western Monsoon (December - February).
