Former Bens captain Wanaguru dies
The death occurred of former St.Benedict's College cricket captain
Rohan Wanaguru on Thursday.
Wanaguru led the Benedictines at cricket in 1975. He was a good all
rounder. He was a hard hitting right hand batsman and a wily left arm
spinner. He began his career under the captaincy of Johnny Martin and
after being vice captain to Basil Perera in 1974 he led the school in
the following year.
Some of his team mates were Malcom Mack, the Perera brothers Lalith
and Sarath, Wasantha Meegoda, Rohan Dias, Chandana Rodrigo and
N.Ravichandran.
After leaving school he played for Saracens Sports Club in the big
league and scored big runs and was also among the wickets. When the Bens
were looking for a coach, he volunteered and showed the Bens how and
during his tenure as coach the Bens enjoyed a successful run.
Wanaguru was 55 at the time of his death.
He leaves his wife Francisca and daughters Udeshika and Anupama.
He is the younger brother of film and tele drama actress Manel. His
funeral will be held on Sunday. Further arrangements will be notified
