Former Bens captain Wanaguru dies

The death occurred of former St.Benedict's College cricket captain Rohan Wanaguru on Thursday.

Wanaguru led the Benedictines at cricket in 1975. He was a good all rounder. He was a hard hitting right hand batsman and a wily left arm spinner. He began his career under the captaincy of Johnny Martin and after being vice captain to Basil Perera in 1974 he led the school in the following year.

Some of his team mates were Malcom Mack, the Perera brothers Lalith and Sarath, Wasantha Meegoda, Rohan Dias, Chandana Rodrigo and N.Ravichandran.

After leaving school he played for Saracens Sports Club in the big league and scored big runs and was also among the wickets. When the Bens were looking for a coach, he volunteered and showed the Bens how and during his tenure as coach the Bens enjoyed a successful run.

Wanaguru was 55 at the time of his death.

He leaves his wife Francisca and daughters Udeshika and Anupama.

He is the younger brother of film and tele drama actress Manel. His funeral will be held on Sunday. Further arrangements will be notified later. ER
