Sharmal in stunning win over Nadaraja

Davis Cup player and top seed Nishangan Nadaraja was sent crashing to defeat by second seeded Sharmal Dissanayake by 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the Boys Under-16 Singles event at Junior National Tennis Championship worked off at SLTA hard courts, Green Path, Colombo yesterday. In the Boys Under-18 Doubles event, last year’s Junior Champion Vimuktha de Alwis and Nishangan Nadararja notched up a 5-7, 6-0, 10-5, win over second seeded Chinthaka Shaveen and Aritha Weerasinghe.

Earlier, Sharmal had stunned another Davis Cup player, Vimuktha de Alwis to win the Boys Under-18 Singles event day before yesterday.

Dissanayake and Madushan Wijesuriya routed Yasitha de Silva and Supun Pathirage 6-2, 7-6(5) in the Boys Under-18 Doubles event. Meanwhile, in the Boys Under-16 Doubles event, Dhanushka Abeywardena and Venuka Hulangamuwa beat Dasun Fonseka and Joshua Moraes by 6-1, 6-0. The tournament will be continued today at the National Tennis Centre where more than 10 finals will be worked off.
