Farmers claim Rs 15m damage
Two paddy cultivators of Thanagkilappu Chavakachcheri have claimed Rs
15 million through their lawyer as compensation to the damage caused to
their paddy crop by stray cattle. Stray Cattle have damage the Maha
season paddy cultivation in 660 acres of land.
They have accused the Pradeshiya Sabha for not taking action for the
mass destruction caused to their crops by herds of stray cattle from
time to time.
The destruction caused to the crops has stunned the growth of paddy
crops. The Pradeshiya Sabha had by their negligence failed to prevent
the stray cattle entering into their fields and cause destruction.
They had accused the Pradeshiya Sabha of neglecting their
responsibility in protecting their fields.
Light at the end of the tunnel
After 23 years, electricity is being brought to Mandaithivu via
cables underneath the sea by Ceylon Electricity Board. The
infrastructure work has been started under the “Spring in the North”
programme.
The President Mandaithivu Pradeshiya Sabha said that electricity
would be supplied in a month from Jaffna to Mandaithivu.
Seminar for journalists
The Deputy Director Government Information Department had arranged a
seminar for the journalists in Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts on
August 2 at Jaffna Secretariat auditorium.
The seminar was to be held to inform and educate the provincial
journalists on the progress of development projects in Jaffna and
Kilinochchi districts and the role of provincial journalists in
propagating the remarkable achievements with the dawn of peace.
The Divisional Secretary was to elucidate on the various development
programmes contemplated and completed so far.
Flag hoisting ceremony
The flag hoisting at Tellipallai Durgadevi temple will take place on
August 18 at 11 am. The festival will be conducted for 12 days. The cart
festival will be held on August 28 followed by “Theertham” (water
cutting ceremony) on the August 29.
Motorcycle thief sentenced
A youth who stole a motorcycle at Varany Siddaveram Kannagi Amman
temple has been sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs
15,000 in default one month simple imprisonment by Chavakachcheri
Magistrate.
The accused was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment suspended
for five years in a Thalikoddy theft case earlier.
The Police brought this to the notice of the Magistrate and he
ordered that the accused should serve the one year rigorous imprisonment
along with the one-year rigorous imprisonment sentenced in the
motorcycle theft case.
Septuagenarian clubbed to death
A 70-year-old woman living alone has been clubbed to death by unknown
persons at Irupalai and the jewellery she was wearing had been robbed.
Her children are living abroad and it was only two days prior to her
murder she had returned to Irupalai from Colombo.
The neighbours had found the doors of her house broken and the woman
lying in a pool of blood.
A blood stained stone was found beside her body. The Jaffna
Magistrate visited the scene and conducted inquiries. The Magistrate
ordered that the body be sent to Jaffna Hospital for post mortem
examination. The Kopay Police are investigating.
Drunk rider fined
A youth who rode a motorcycle under the influence of liquor at
Annaikoddai was fined Rs 2,500 by the Mallakam Magistrate. The accused
pleaded guilty.
