Olympics PepperCube - consultants survey results for Sri Lanka

The Olympic Games is considered to be the world's foremost sports competition with 204 nations and 10,500 athletes participating in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The most widely accepted date for the inception of the ancient Olympics is 776 BC. The first game held under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee was hosted in Athens in 1896. These Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events.

Sri Lanka first participated at the Olympic Games in 1948, and has sent a delegation to every Olympic Games since then, with exception of 1976. Sri Lankan athletes have won two Olympic silver medals, one in 1948 by Duncun White for Men's 400 metre hurdles and in 2000 by Susanthika Jayasinghe for Women's 200 metres.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games is the 30th official Olympic Games. It began in London, United Kingdom, on July 27 and will continue until August 12 2012.

So has the Olympic fever hit Sri Lanka?

A random sample survey conducted by PepperCube Consultants the fastest growing market research agency in Sri Lanka Exclusivley to Daily News Business, indicates that Sri Lanka is ready¦ “So let the games begin¦ Faster, Higher, Stronger”.

The survey was conducted via telephone using a structured questionnaire as the data collection tool across all age groups, Socio Economic Classes and among both Males and Females. Field work was carried out last July.

It was found out that 78% of those polled were aware of the games and approximately 68% of the adult population can be expected to follow the London games during the two week period

As expected amongst those who will follow the games, an overwhelming 85% will be glued to their TV sets.

An ideal opportunity for the marketing fraternity to drive their brand messages to the masses.

Approximately 80% of Sri Lankans are happy with the team selected to represent Sri Lanka at the London games.

Most Sri Lankans believed that Sri Lankan athletes are in London to participate in 3 key sets of events, namely Athletics, Swimming and Badminton. Indicating, a potentially higher viewer ship during the time slots of the above-mentioned events especially during Athletics and Swimming.

It was also disclosed that 88% of optimistic Sri Lankans expect the Sri Lankan team to return home with some medals further fuelling potentially higher viewer ship especially during the Athletics, Swimming and Badminton events. The Sri Lankan populations expect United State of America to triumph as winners at 2012 summer Olympics in London followed closely by China.
