Man who posed as President’s friend arrested

A man who prepared a forged deed for a land in Galle and sold it at Rs 2.5 million by posing as a close friend of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to raise the confidence of the buyer, was arrested by the Special Investigation Unit at Mihiripenna, Habaraduwa on Wednesday.

The suspect was remanded until August 22 by the Galle magistrate.

The Special Investigation Unit is investigating.

Seven arrested while stealing temple bell

Seven people who attempted to a steal a bell at a temple in Ambanpola were arrested early yesterday.

The suspects had entered the Embulgiriya Rajamaha Viharaya in Kirimatiyawa around 12.30am and started removing the bell.

The bell fell off causing a big noise which awakened the chief priest and villagers. The suspects were caught by villagers and handed over to Ambanpola Police.

Suspect’s suicide bid fails

A suspect attempted to commit suicide by slashing his neck with a shaving blade within the court premise yesterday when Nuwara Eliya high court judge sentenced him to death after a trial in which he was found guilty of a murder of a women.

He was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Kidnappers in hot water

Two suspects taken into custody in connection with kidnapping and assaulting a person from Grandpass to rob his valuables, were released on Rs 200,000 sureties when produced before the Aluthkage magistrate.

The Colombo Crime Division arrested the suspects after a complaint was lodged on August 3.

Con-woman remanded

A woman who allegedly swindled Rs 10.75 million from 18 persons was remanded by Pugoda magistrate after she failed to produce a Rs 1 million surety on being produced before the Pugoda magistrate on Wednesday.

Police arrested the woman, a resident of Ganegoda, Dompe on Tuesday following 18 complaints by persons who had fallen prey to her.

Police found the woman had obtained money by promising high interest.

She was produced before the Pugoda magistrate who granted her bail on two sureties of Rs 500,000. The suspect failed to produce any surety and was remanded.

Murder suspect arrested

A suspect was arrested in connection with the death of a 32-year-old man at Hikkaduwa. The victim died of stab injuries at Karapitiya Hospital on Wednesday.

Two held over death of man

Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday, following investigations into the death of a 35 -year - old man in Matara by Gandara Police.

The victim admitted to Matara hospital with head injuries died on July 31.

Investigations revealed V Indika de Silva of Kuligoda, Ambalangoda was injured when his head hit against a concrete pillar of the house where he consumed alcohol with two other men.

After an argument, the two had pushed the victim who fell and knocked his head on the pillar.

The Matara magistrate remanded the two suspects until August 21.

Woman with heroin

A 28 - year - old woman was arrested with 100.6 grammes of heroin in her possession at a house in Maharagama on Tuesday by the Police Anti-Narcotics Bureau.

Cannabis haul seized

Pannala Police arrested two suspects and seized 9.579 kgs of cannabis hidden inside a lorry transporting vegetables at Galyaya, Pannala on Wednesday.

The suspects had hidden the stock of cannabis under vegetable sacks. The suspects, residents of Udamviara, Sevanagala were produced before Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Court yesterday.
