Dr Rangita, GWLI director

The Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Schools in Washington DC, USA has appointed Dr Rangita de Silva de Alwis as director of its Global Women's Leadership Initiative (GWLI).

In announcing the appointment, former US Senator and Wilson Centre President and CEO Jane Harman referred to Dr Rangita de Silva de Alwis as a “tireless advocate for women's leadership”, and said she is “she is experienced as a leading human rights law scholar with an unbeatable global network of contacts which makes her the ideal choice to direct the GWLI.”

The Initiative encompasses the Council of Women World Leaders, a group of nearly 50 women, current and former heads of state and governments, and the Women in Public Service Project launched by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In her capacity as Director, Dr Rangita de Silva de Alwis will direct the affairs of the Initiative which include promoting networks among women leaders, mentoring and training emerging women leaders in support of the goal of 5% women public servants by 2050.

Before her appointment, she functioned as the director of the International Human Rights Policy at the Wellesley Centres for Women in Massachusetts USA. She is a Gender Advisor to the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice and the National Assembly. She had also been consulted by the legislators of many other countries on gender and related matters.

She holds a Masters Degree in LLM and a Doctorate in Law from the Harvard Law School.
