Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa participates in a ceremony to hand over the Maligawatte Flats renovated after 39 years.

The ministry renovated Maligawatte Flats after 39 years. It was handed over to the public by Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa on August 5.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Weerawansa said the Maligawatte Housing Complex was established in 1973 under the guidance of former Housing Minister Peter Keuneman.

“Former President Ranasinghe Premadasa developed the housing complex. The housing complex was not developed after this,” he said.

“The majority of residents of the Maligawatte Flats are UNP supporters. People have the right to have their own political view, but all are Sri Lankans. They are also dedicated people who render a service for the country's development,” the minister said. Weerawansa said under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's guidance, a number of neglected housing complexes in Colombo have been renovated under the Mahinda Chinthanaya Janasewana Nagamu Purawara Programme.

About 10,000 people live in 1,520 housing units of the Maligawatte Housing Complex. The National Housing Development Authority spent Rs 280 million for the modernisation project of the housing complex which includes carpeted roads and other facilities. All renovations are done by theState Engineering Corporation.
