‘Govt aware of problems in education sector’

The chain of problems in the education sphere in recent times has
been the focus of attention at the highest political level, Mass Media
and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella
said.
Addressing the Cabinet press briefing at the ministry yesterday, the
minister said the government is of the view that students and parents
should not be subject to any injustice and inconvenience due to the
recent problems such as the Z score issue, lecturers’ strike and errors
in A-L question papers.
The minister said the government cannot dismiss any of these issues
as trivial, adding that this trend is not appreciable at all. Referring
to the Z score issue, the minister said that it could only be solved
through a court intervention. He said the government is presently
estimating the number of students inconvenienced by the Z score change.
He said the government is discussing to provide alternative solutions to
those students.
He observed that the government is trying its best to arrive at a win
win situation with regard to the lecturers’ demands, adding that it has
not given up the attempts. He said the root cause of the problems in the
education sphere must be identified and healed.
Information Department Director General Prof Ariyaratne Athugala,
Media Center for National Development Director Ariya Rubasinghe and
Information Director Wasanthapriya Ramanayake also participated in the
press conference.
