Training programme for fishermen

Fishermen will be trained on modern technology, modern equipment, life safety and vessel repairs. The government will issue a certificate to fishermen who complete the training programme, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

Minister Senaratne revealed these facts at a discussion with the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC Maritime Campus) authorities including Managing Director Ajith Peiris.

The CINEC Maritime Campus will commence a certificate course for fishermen.

The ministry has taken these measures to prevent fishermen from meeting with accidents in the seas.

"Life safety and vessel safety are important for all fishermen. It helps to prevent them from meeting with accidents and make a contribution to the national economy", the minister said. 'The fisheries industry is the third most important industry in the country. Fishermen play a major role in the journey towards the country's development he said.
