Elder held for raping girl

A 67- year- old person who allegedly raped a seven- year- old girl at Moorstreet Junction, Mannar on Monday. was arrested by Mannar Police.


Suspect nabbed with heroin

A resident of Perakum Mawatha, Mulleriyawa was arrested with 50 grammes of heroin by the Police Narcotics Bureau in Mulleriyawa on Tuesday.

The suspect is being questioned.

Elderly man dies after tree falls on him

An elderly man who was seriously injured when a kithul tree fell on him following strong winds, succumbed to the injuries at Urubokka hospital on Tuesday. The victim was identified as N Danny, 65, of Pinnaliya.


Alleged sexual abuse: Army Sergeant arrested

Kotawehera Police arrested an Army Sergeant in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl in Digenwewa, Kotawehera on Thursday.

The suspect is serving at the Ambepussa Army Camp and was due to be produced before the Nikaweratiya magistrate yesterday.


Woman murdered, jewellery robbed

A woman was murdered and her jewellery stolen from her house in Mailankulama, Wanathawilluwa. The incident occurred on Thursday when thieves broke into W Pushpa Nalani Thissera's house.

The thieves later murdered the woman aged 27 by stabbing her with a sharp object.

The suspects later stole her gold jewellery.

Wanathawulluwa Police are investigating.


Student dies in accident

A 12- year- old student knocked down by a double cab while crossing the road on the way home after school, died at Mannar Hospital on Thursday.

Investigations revealed U Ridan of Kanchanakuduiruppu was knocked down while crossing the road after getting down from the bus while returning home.

Mannar Police arrested the driver.


Six arrested for brass lamp theft

Six persons with a stock of stolen brass lamps in their possession were arrested by Tangalle Police on Thursday.

The suspects were arrested following a series of investigations after a group of persons broke into the store room of Wedihitikanda Temple to steal a brass lamp on June 20.

Police recovered 46 brass lamps and 473 parts from disassembled brass lamps in their possession.

Police also seized a double cab.


Op nabs court offenders

Police rounded up 107 persons evading court warrants issued against them in a one day operation in Matara.

The raids were carried out on the orders of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Matara.

Around 180 police personnel participated in the raid, including a Chief Police Inspector, seven Police Inspectors, 24 Sub Inspectors, 61 Sergeants, 83 Constables, five Women Police Constables and a Police Defence Officer. Police aimed to arrest 78 day warranted and 46 open warranted persons in the raids, and arrested 107 warranted persons from among them.
