The newly appointed directress of health services in the Central
Province Dr S Subasinghe is unable to perform her duties as her office
room has been allegedly locked up by the former directress who has
failed to comply with the transfer order given by the Health Ministry
with the approval of the PSC.
The newly appointed directress is seated at a table in another
section of the office wasting her time.
This has disrupted health administration work, particularly dengue
control activities in Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. The
former directress when questioned said she has filed a petition in
Supreme Court against her transfer and is awaiting a court decision.
SL Economic Summit 2012 launched

The 13th Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2012 will be held from today to
July 13 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo.
Organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the premier business
Chamber in the country, the event will bring together a large number of
business leaders, government officials, ambassadors and policy makers
onto one platform to discuss issues related to the Sri Lankan economy.
Senior Minister and Presidential Advisor Dr Sarath Amunugama will be
the Chief Guest.
Duty free mobikes for Grama Niladaris

“The Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry will provide
Grama Niladaris with duty free motorcycles, former Divisional Secretary
for Bingiriya A M Jayathilake said at a meeting of Grama Niladaris at
the Bingiriya Youth Training Centre.
Grama Niladaris who serve in remote areas would be offered with
mobikes at the outset. About 14,000 GNs in 330 Divisional Secretariat
Divisions will benefit from the programme.
Applications from GNs will be called for at the Divisional
Secretariat level. The cost of mobikes will be recovered from the
salaries of GNs on monthly installment basis, A M Jayathilake said.
Thalassaemia affects children in Uva

Most school children in the Uva Province have signs of Thalassaemia,
Paediatrician Dr Chandana Kekulawala said.
A programme was launched to inspect the blood of school children to
detect the disease in the province.
The Paediatrician said awareness programmes have been launched in
schools. He said 150 children who are suffering from Thalassaemia have
been registered with the Badulla General Hospital.
Ancient Buddha statue unearthed

A marble Buddha statue was unearthed from Siyabalanduwa Manabarana
Raja Maha Viharaya in an excavation carried out on July 10.
It is 4 inches in height and resembles Samadhi statue signs.
Archaeologist Dr Raj Somadeva who was involved in excavation work said
that it belongs to the 10th century.
Motorcyclist in deadly ride

A motorcyclist died when the motor cycle he was riding ran off the
road and crashed on to a culvert at Dematawewa on the
Thuruwila-Tirappane road on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Chulasinghe, 49, a father of two of
Vijayapura.
Hidogama Police are investigating.

HR awareness programme for Prison Officers
The Centre for the Study of Human Rights of the University of Colombo
will conduct a four day training of trainers programme for Prison
Officers from July 11 to 14 at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research
and Training Institute.
Resource persons will be lecturers from the Attorney General’s
Department, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo.
Buddhist panel discussion
The next Buddhist panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held
on Sunday, July 15 at 10 am at its Borella building on ‘Is the Practice
of Buddhism Feasible?’ The panelists are Bhikkuni Kusuma and Das
Miriyagalla, with Rajah Kuruppu as moderator. All are welcome.
Celebration of China-SL diplomatic relations
The 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations
between Sri Lanka and China and the 60th anniversary of Sri Lanka-China
Rubber Rice Pact will be celebrated at the Sirimavo Bandaranayake Hall,
BMICH today at 4.15 pm.
The Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association (SLCFA) together with Sri
Lanka China Society, Association for Sri Lanka China Social and Cultural
Cooperation and Sri Lanka China Journalist Forum in collaboration with
the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka will hold the celebration.
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne will be the chief guest. External
Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris will deliver the key note address.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya

Mosquito breeders fined

Six residents of Katuruwatte – Rathupaswela - Veliveriya areas were
fined Rs 1500/ each by the Gampaha Additional District Judge and
Additional magistrate, Indika Attanayake yesterday, for allegedly
failing to destroy mosquito breeding grounds within their premises.
Veliveriya Police led evidence.
Bridge widened with villagers’ assistance

The narrow bridge across the Nilwala ganga at Kandewatta on the
Weliwa-Aluwana road in the Pitabeddara Divisional Secretariat area is
being widened under the Eka Gamakata Eka Wedak programme.
The Economic Development Ministry has funded Rs 10 lakhs for this
programme. Villagers of the area extend their co-operation by working on
a voluntary basis to complete the construction work.
