Forty one Australia bound arrested

Forty one persons, including 38 men, a woman, a boy and a girl were arrested by Vakarai Police while trying to leave for Australia illegally from Mankeni beach in Vakarai.

Police arrested two drivers who transported the group and another man. Police also seized two vans, a three wheeler, food and two boats.

They are residents of Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, Vakarai and Chilaw, Police said.

The suspects were produced before the Vakarai magistrate yesterday.


Man stabbed

A 26 - year - old man died of stab injuries in Kayts on Thursday. The body was sent to the Jaffna Hospital for a postmortem. The magisterial investigation into the death of Selvaraj Anuraj of Naranthanai was due yesterday. Kayts Police are investigating.


Woman in poison case remanded

A woman in Kolonna who tried to poison her six- year- old daughter was remanded until July 19 by the Embilipitiya magistrate.

The girl was first rushed to Suriyakanda Rural Hospital and then transferred to Ratnapura Hospital.

Police investigations commenced following information from a doctor who treated the girl at Suriyakanda Rural Hospital. It was revealed the woman after a quarrel with her husband had committed the crime.

The girl is recovering, Police said. Kolonna Police are investigating.


Chain snatch thieves arrested

Two suspects were arrested in Polgahawela for snatching a gold chain worth Rs 75,000 from a woman.

The suspects had snatched the chain while the woman was walking in Polgahawela.

Police found the stolen gold chain in the suspects' possession. They were produced before the Polgahawela magistrate court.


Worker allegedly rapes girl

A worker who allegedly kidnapped and raped a girl aged 16 by deceiving her was arrested in the Minuwangoda area by the Women and Child Bureau of Horana Police.

The suspect, 36, is a resident of Horana, who Police had strived to arrest for over a year. The suspect was engaged in repairing the ceiling in the girl's house, Police said. After the incident, the worker fled the area and lived in Polonnaruwa, Rajagiriya and Ratnapura.

On information received by the Horana and Nugegoda Special Police Bureaus, Sergeant Duushika of Horana Police arrested him.

The suspect will be produced before court.


Suspects arrested in jewellery theft

Three people who allegedly robbed jewellery from a vault were arrested in the Koswatta area, police said. Investigations revealed the vault belonged to a pawning centre and held jewellery worth nearly Rs 1,997, 000.

The suspects had mortgaged part of the jewellery in another pawning centre and obtained cash, it was revealed. Police seized three receipts issued by the pawning centre. Suspects will be produced before the Marawila magistrate's court.


Chinese attempt to rob bank teller data

Two Chinese who allegedly tried to rob data from a bank teller card by attaching electric components to the teller machine at a bank in Kollupitiya were ordered to be remanded by the Colombo Fort magistrate.

The suspecs were identified by close-up camera records installed near the teller machine, police said. Police said they also got information of another two such incidents and investigations are on to arrest them.


Businessmen nabbed for tapping water

Two businessmen who allegedly tapped water illegally from a main pipeline were ordered to be remanded till July 16 by the Welimada magistrate's court.

The suspects are residents of Welimada.

Residents lodged several complaints with the police the water supply in the area was frequently facing a breakdown.

Police arrested the suspects. Investigations revealed the pipeline supplied water to government offices, homes and business institutes and it was the main water supply pipeline in the area. Investigations are continuing.
