Date of application for postal voting extended

The period for receipt of applications for postal voting scheduled to end tomorrow has been extended until July 19, the Elections Secretariat said in a release yesterday.

The release said public servants in the administrative districts in the area of authority of the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils who are likely to be deployed for election duty and personnel in the essential services and the three Armed services and the Police are entitled to apply to vote by post.

It added: “ It is not possible to provide facilities to vote by post to state officers registered as electors in the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council areas but are now serving in other provinces.

“This category of officers can apply for leave to vote in person at the polling station under Section 123 of the Provincial Council Act No 2 of 1988. These officers should not apply to vote by post.

“It is also notified for the information of the certifying officer to personally examine applications made by his officers and certify the applications and immediately post the certified applications before July 19 to the returning officer of the district where the voter is registered. This date will not be extended any further. Any application received after this date and incomplete applications will be rejected.”
