House shot at: gold chain, money stolen

Wattala Police commenced a search operation to arrest a group of persons who shot at a resident at Wattala and stole a gold chain and Rs 300,000 on Sunday. A group of unidentified gunmen arrived in a car and shot at the resident of No 165A, Hekitta road before they rob the chain and money. A person who was injured in the shooting has been admitted to Colombo National Hospital.


Nabbed with heroin

A man and a woman were arrested by Police Narcotic Bureau with 50 grams of heroin at the Borupana junction, Ratmalana. They were taken into custody when the Police stopped the motor bicycle they were travelling. After interrogation from the suspects, Police arrested another person who was a resident of Pilimathalawa. They were being questioned under detention.


Thirty four arrested for flouting environmental law

The Police Naval Unit arrested 34 persons who violated environmental protection regulations during raids carried out in the Kelani Ganga and Bolgoda Ganga from June 16 to June 29. The naval units of Palliyawatte, Peliyagoda, Kospalana and Moratu Modara conducted the raids using police naval vessels in marshy banks of the Kelani Ganga and Bolgoda Ganda and arrested persons who dumped and released industrial waste into the fresh waters.

Palliyawatte and Peliyagoda Police Naval Units arrested 13 persons who polluted the Kalani Ganga while 21 were arrested for releasing industrial waste into the Bolgoga Ganga. The raid was carried out under the supervision of Police Naval Unit Director SP Ranjith Dayananda.


Police foil human smuggling attempt

Kataragama Police arrested five persons while they were staying at Dutugemunu pilgrims’ rest to be deported to Australia illegally. Acting on information received, Police arrested the suspects aged 23,24,33, 40 and 54 who were residents of Udappuwa, Vavuniya, Mullaitive and Negambo. Interrogation revealed that they were waiting for the travel agent who promised them to help migrate to Australia illegally.

A Police team has been deployed to arrest the job agent. Tissamaharama Magistrate remanded the suspects until July 4.


Mosquito breeders fined Rs 225,000

Nine suspects who pleaded guilty to facilitating mosquito breeding grounds were fined Rs 225,000 by Maligakanda no 2 court Magistrate Ayesha Abdeen.

They were arrested in raids carried out on Sunday. The suspects were charged under the Mosquito Born Diseases Prevention Act, sentence 4(1).

The magistrate fined each Rs 25,000. Police said the accused were residents of Keselwatte, Grandpass, Maligawatta, Narahenpita and Kirulapone.
