Workshop
The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka (FPA Sri Lanka) in
collaboration with the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) is
organising the third of a series of workshops on reproductive health and
sexual medicine at the SLMA 125th Anniversary International Medical
Congress at Hall B, BMICH on July 6 from 9 am to 4 pm.

The workshop will begin with opening comments by Dr. Pramilla
Senanayake - President FPA Sri Lanka on Reproductive Health Sexual
Medicine Day.
Fertility issues will be discussed by Prof. Harsha Seneviratne, Prof.
Athula Kaluarachchi and Prof. Sumedha Wijeratne.
Gender based violence will be discussed by Dr. Sardha Hemapriya, Dr.
Sanath Lanarolle, Dr. Lakshmen Senanyake and Dr. Wathsala Jayasuriya.
Dr. Mangala Dissanayake, Dr. Harsha Atapattu, Dr.Kapila Ranasinghe
and Palitha Fernando PC will discuss abortion.
Dhawala Hasthi at Lumbini
Dhawala Hasthi, the stylised drama produced by Devika
Wijayagunasekara, will be staged at the Lumbini Theatre, Havelock Town
on July 10 at 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm.
Rains in Kandy after pirith chanting
After a prolonged drought, rains were experienced in Polgolla, Kandy
on Sunday with the commencement of an all night pirith chanting
organised by the Mahaweli Authority to invoke blessings for rain at the
Polgolla dam. Irrigation and Water Management Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva and ministry and Irrigation Department officials were present.
The pirith chanting was conducted by the Maha Sangha led by Wayamba
and Central Provinces Deputy Chief Sanghanayake Ven Yatirawan
Seelanandana Thera.
At the conclusion of the pirith ceremony yesterday morning, Minister
de Silva sprinkled pirith pan on the waters of the Polgolla reservoir to
the chanting of seth pirith by the maha sangha.
Appointments for graduates
Two thousand and forty seven unemployed graduates in the North are to
be appointed as graduate trainees. Appointment letters will be handed
over on July 4 at Veerasingham Hall, Jaffna. Those who graduated before
2011 will receive appointment letters.
Creches opened

For the benefit of those in employment, children’s safety and welfare
centres are being opened in Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu and Mannar areas.
The children are being looked after by women volunteers on a rotation
basis.
National Child Protection Authority president Anoma Dissanayake said
the importance of safeguarding children is being propagated and women
volunteers have come forward to look after the children lacking parental
care.
Kandy Esala Pageant kap planting on July 19

The Kandy Esala Pageant this year begins with the kap planting
ceremony at the four main devalayas on July 19. The Devala Perahera will
be held at the devale premises from July 19 to 22. The first Kumbal
Perahera will parade the streets of Kandy on July 23 followed by the
daily Kumbal Peraheras till July 27.
The first Randoli Perahera, the most colourful part of the pageant
will begin on July 28 and continue daily until the final Randoli
Perahera on August 1 night.
The pageant will conclude with the water cutting ceremony at the
Getambe ferry on August 2 morning and the day perehera.
Esala Maha Sisu Perahera
The Esala Maha Sisu Perahera, commemorating the 2600th Sri
Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi will be held today. The event is coordinated by
the Education Ministry. More than 15,000 schoolchildren belonging to all
races and religions will participate.
A number of professional cultural troupes too will take part. The
procession commences at 3.00 pm at Mahanama College and will reach
Hunupitiya Gangaramaya proceeding via Galle Road. |
