Moves to boost agro- tourism

The Agriculture Department plans to promote agro- tourism in Sri Lanka, Agriculture Department Information and Communication Director Rohan Wijekoon said.

He said as Sri Lanka is an agricultural country, it is easy to promote agro- tourism.

"Sri Lanka has a rich agricultural biodiversity. We also have a proud history of agriculture. The department plans to promote agro - tourism based on these two factors," he said.

Wijekoon said a large number of tourists are visiting Sri Lanka because of the peaceful situation in the country. "The majority of tourists are from the West. Our farming lands can easily attract them as they cannot experience such type of things in their countries. The department will also conduct cultural shows about the history of the country's agriculture specially for tourists," he said.

A model show will be held at the National Farmers' Week from July 20 to 25, Wijekoon said.
