Police commenced investigations to ascertain as to how certain
material and items found their way illegally into the Vavuniya Remand
Prison. The raid followed Friday’s commotion inside the Vavuniya Remand
Prison.
Following four hours search by the Police assisted by the STF and
prison officials, 55 mobile phones, heroin, six packets of ganja, mobile
phone chargers, Rs 23,100, dry rations sufficient for three weeks and
some iron poles were discovered in the prison cells.
The mobile phones drew special attention of the Police.
Investigations are on to ascertain the identity of the recipients of the
calls made through them from the prisons.
Police are also investigating to find out how these items came into
the possession of the prisoners and if Friday’s agitation was the result
of prisoners being incited by outside forces through communication via
the mobile phones. |
