Matale maintain dominance in boys’ school hockey

Two schools from the hockey team of Matale Christ Church College and
Vijaya College finished Joint Champion as the finals did not produce a
result due to bad light at the all-island Schools Boys Under 17 Hockey
Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association and
played at Shalika Grounds, yesterday.
The finals was played only up to the first half and the second half
could not be played due to poor light conditions and there was no
scoring till the match was called off.
T.M. Cramer and Ajith Manjula umpired.
Matale Schools continued their dominance in school hockey when four
schools namely Vijaya College, Christ Church College, Zahira College and
the defending champions St. Thomas College qualified for the quarter
finals.
The balance four schools were from rest of the island which included
the major cities Colombo and Kandy.
The first semi-final saw Christ Church College edge out Royal College
1-0 and Vijaya College beat Ananda College 1-0 on penalty strokes.
This championship was last year won by Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya,
Kandy (Girls) and St. Thomas College, Matale (Boys) but both schools did
not appear in the finals this year. St. Thomas College bowing out in the
quarter-finals and Seetha Devi BV in the semi-finals.
