Deadly water

A man who got choked while drinking water, died at Salawa Hospital on Monday.

Kosgama Police said the 40-year-old man was a mentally retarded person.

The postmortem revealed the man died after he got choked while drinking water.

Kosgama Police are investigating.


Fire in forest reserves

A fire that broke out on Tuesday in the forest reserves in Dummalathenna and Moneragala in Ambatenna was extinguished by the Passara Police with the assistance of the Passara Divisional Secretarial officers and people in the area.

An area of 10 acres in the reserve was destroyed in the fire.

Meanwhile, a part of the land belonging to the SLCTB depot in Ampara caught fire on the same day. It was controlled from being spread to other parts by using water bowsers from the Ampara hospital and the Urban Council.

The Ampara Police and depot employees together put out the fire.

Ampara police are investigating to ascertain the cause of the ignition.


Probe into man’s death

Kelaniya Police have commenced an investigation into the death of a man who was stabbed at Koholwila in Kelaniya.

The suspect who was also injured in the incident is being treated at the Colombo National Hospital under police custody.

A A Victor Dial alias Kumara of Gonawala, 48, died in the incident.


Grandmother assaulted to death

A 71-year-old woman, A E Silin Nona, succumbed to her injuries after she was allegedly attacked by her grandson during a quarrel.

She was treated at the Karapitiya hospital.

Rathgama Police reported that the suspect’s father was also hospitalized following the attack. The suspect was remanded by the Galle magistrate.

Rathgama Police are investigating.


Woman dies in grenade attack

A woman died when an unidentified man threw a hand grenade at her house yesterday morning in Bisobandara in Medirigiriya.

U S Hemalatha, 36, died in the attack. Her body was sent to the Medirigiriya hospital morgue for the postmortem.

Medirigiriya Police are investigating.


Accused sentenced to death

A suspect in a murder case pleaded guilty and was sentenced to death by Kegalle High Court judge Menaka Wejesundara.

He was found guilty for the death of H S Kumara Seneviratne. He died in 2010 after he was attacked by the accused.

The court found S Upali Premathilaka, guilty of all charges.
