Two drown while bathing

Two persons, a 10-year-old boy and an 18-year-old youth drowned in Ratnapura and Kandeketiya while bathing on Monday.

Police said Amal Sandaruwan, 10, drowned while bathing in Koskolawatte pool in Ratnapura. He was among a group of pilgrims from Weliweriya.

Meanwhile, Kandeketiya Police have commenced a search operation to find a person who had drowned in a flash flood while bathing in the Loggaloya reservoir on the same day. Police identified the victim as M R M Gayan Sameera of Maturata who was also on a pilgrimage.

Kandeketiya Police are investigating.


Murdered woman's body found

Neluwa Police found a body of a 47-year-old woman at her home in Kosmulla, Neluwa on Monday.

Police detected injuries on her body caused by a sharp object which had been there for two days. The body was taken to the Karapitiya Hospital morgue for the postmortem.

Further investigations revealed that the victim, P M Pathmawathi was living with a man who had fled the area after the incident.

Neluwa Police are investigating.


Jumbo attack

A man died after an elephant attacked him in Ambanpola yesterday morning.

Forty five-year-old R D Dayaratne of Atharagalla was returning home on his bicycle after seeing a drama at the community hall in the village.

Ambanpola Police are investigating.


Wanted suspects arrested

Three persons wanted by the Police for a series of burglaries in Poddala and Galle were arrested by the Galle Police on Monday.

Police also seized a foreign made hand grenade in their possession.

They were arrested when the Police stopped a three wheeler at a random check and questioned them due to their suspicious behavior. Police found that the suspects were involved in eight crimes where they broke into houses and shops.

Galle Police are investigating.


Two nabbed for misleading court

Kandy Police arrested a resident of Asgiriya who misled court by producing a bogus deed for a bond for a certified bail.

Police also arrested a woman from Gunnepana who signed for the certified bail.

They have produced the bogus deed for a certified bail of Rs 2.5 million for a number of cases in the Kandy magistrate court. The accused in connection to the cases which bail was granted, has also been arrested on five warrants. They were produced before the Kandy magistrate.

Kandy Division Criminal Investigation Unit is investigating.


Five netted for thefts

Warakapola Police arrested five persons at Mainkoluwa in Warakapola who allegedly committed several burglaries in Narammala.

Police arrested them while they were travelling in a van and found that they had broken into a house in Thorapitiya and stole Rs 190,000 and Rs 247,000 worth gold jewellery.

Police seized Rs 89,315 of the stolen money, part of the burgled jewellery and a mobile phone. Investigations revealed that the suspects are responsible for two more mass scale thefts in the area.

Warakapola Police are investigating.
