Four Lankans charged with jewellery theft in Singapore
Four Sri Lankan nationals were charged in court on Monday with
stealing seven gold chains from a shop in Little India, Singapore.
Police said about 7.30pm on May 30, a 58-year-old saleswoman of the shop
was attending to a customer when he made off with seven pieces of gold
chains she was holding. Her colleagues chased him but lost him in the
crowd.
The stolen gold chains are worth about S$53,000.
Police arrested the first suspect about 7pm on June 1, after he was
detained in Syed Alwi Road by a staff of the jewellery shop.
The other three suspects were arrested at Changi Airport at about
9.30pm on June 2, when they were about to leave Singapore.
Four pieces of the stolen gold chains were found in the suspects’
belongings.
The suspects were charged in court of having the ‘common intention’
to use criminal force to steal seven pieces of gold chains from sales
assistant Periayyah.
They are remanded at the central police division lock-up for
investigation. -
