A mangrove replanting campaign in the Puttalam district got underway with the initiation of Wayamba Province Fisheries, Electricity, Housing and Construction Minister Sanath Nishantha Perera. About 25,000 mangrove saplings were planted on the Puttalam district lagoon side by schoolchildren of 10 schools.

The minister provided Rs 500,000 to expedite the resuscitation of depleted mangroves on the lagoon side in the Puttalam district. In 2011, a similar programme was carried out in the district. Chilaw Zonal Education Director P N U Nonis, school teachers and parents of children also participated in the campaign.
