Sil observation at Mihintale

The Amadam Sisila Sadaham Caharika Padanama has organised a Sil observation with 1,500 youths at the Mihintale sacred site on June 3 to mark the Poson Poya. Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister SM Chandrasena is the chairman of the Amadam Sisila Sadaham Charika Padanama.

Dhamma sermons and discussions and meditation programmes are included in the programme.

The Amadam Sisila Sadaham Caharika Padanama commenced on Vesak Poya day in 2004 in the Eastern Province.

The SM Chandrasena Foundation will sponsor the event.


Christian Unity Pentecost Rally

The second annual Christian Unity Pentecost Rally on the theme 'One in Christ' will be held on June 9 from 8.30am to 2pm at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour in Colombo.

Mannar Bishop Rt Rev Dr Rayappu Joseph will deliver the first sermon in Tamil and Colombo Anglican Bishop Rt Rev Dr Dhiloraj Canagasabey will deliver the second sermon in English.

Rev Colton Wickremaratne, founder Pastor of the People's Church will deliver the third message in Sinhala, on behalf of the Evangelical Community.

Sr Francisca Alahakoon, a member of the Kithu Dana Pubuduwa (Catholic Renewal Movement) will deliver a message followed by a recital of the Pubuduwa Cultural Troupe.

Choirs of different denominations will sing in-between the messages. There will be short skits including books and refreshment stalls.

The rally is organised by the Inter Church Fellowship comprising pastors and lay people from more than 10 denominations, and meets monthly.

Thanksgiving Service

The Thanksgiving Service, the first official event of the golden anniversary celebrations of the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCY SL) will be held on June 9 from10am to noon at St Michael's Church, Polwatte, Kollupitiya.

The programme will commence with a procession of YMCA members and invitees.

Cultural activities will be performed representing all ethnic identities, followed by the liturgical service. Over 250 participants from YMCA schools, churches and civil society organisations are expected to attend. The official ceremony of the issuing of commemorative first day cover will take place after the Thanksgiving Service. Postal Services Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga will grace the occasion.


Children's book launch

Flowers -(Mal), Rivers -(Ganga), Fish -(Maalu), Birds -(Kurullo), Paddy fields -(Kumburu) Sinhala and English medium children's book launch will be held under the patronage of Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana at the Central Environment Authority, Denzil Kobbekaduwa Road, Battaramulla today at 3.15pm.

The authors of the five books are Dr Wasantha Welianga and Chintha Kossinna.

The ceremony will be chaired by Dr Nirmala Pallewatta with the participation of environmentalist, veteran artiste Irangani Serasinghe and Central Environment Authority chairman Charitha Herath.


Ayurvedic doctors feted

A special felicitation programme for ayurvedic doctors of the Kurunegale district will be held under the patronage of Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake and Indigenous Medicine Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranayake at the Kurunegala Provincial Auditorium today at 9am.

It is organised by the Indigenous Medicine Ministry and the Ayurvedic Medicine Council.

Gold medals will be awarded for ayurvedic doctors who have completed 25 years' service.

Discussions will be held to make traditional doctors aware about traditional cattle medicine by Wayamba University Vice Chancellor Prof Nimal Perera.

An awareness programme on legal conditions for ayurvedic doctors will also be held.


Donations from ex- Speaker

Former Speaker M H Mohamed will present cash donations to 10 disabled persons unable to seek medical assistance at a ceremony at the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre, Maligawatte, Colombo 10 tomorrow at 10am.

Sufi Organisation member Hilmy Mohideen has made donations for this programme.


Pirith Pinkama to mark Poson

To mark this year’s Poson festival, a one-week pirith ceremony was launched opposite the Jaya Siri Mahabodhiya yesterday. The pirith ceremony commenced with the arrival of a perahera from the Isurumuniya Raja Maha Viharaya. The ceremony will end following the Dorakada Asna on 7th June, 2012.


Dansala in Ambalangoda

A day/night Poson Dansela (rice and curry) will be held at Mawatta near the Ambalangoda railway bridge on June 3.

It is organized by the youth organization of Mawatta.


Poson perahera

The 40th Annual Poson perahera of Aluthwala, Meetiyagoda will be held on June 3. The perahera will include low country and Kandyan dancers and an elephant carrying the relics casket.


Felicitation ceremony

A ceremony to mark 50 years acting life of Santin Gunawardana, actor in the fame of Simon Sashawa, of Hunuwataye Kathawa will be held today at Sawsiripaya, Tower Hall foundation at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.


Worthy cause

The Sir Lalita Rajapakse Charitable Trust paid all electricity bills of the Anula Wijerama Childrens’ Home, Balapitiya, totalling over Rs 50,000 from Vesak 2011 to Vesak 2012, to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi.


Appeal

K H P Wimalaratne of Shanthi, Old Road, Talalla, Gandara Matara is suffering from an acute heart disease (Severe Triple Vessel disease).

Consultant cardiologist Dr P P Sathananthan has recommended surgical revarscularization to save his life. The surgery is estimated to cost Rs 300,000. Wimalaratne says he is unable to foot the bill due to his financial plight.

He requests the public to assist his cause by sending possible financial contributions. Contributions can be remitted to account number 307200270003498 at the People’s Bank Gandara branch.
