Canned fish tested for radiation

The Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) is scrutinising imported fish and iced fish to ensure that they are free of any radiation impact resulting from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant accident in Japan. They will present reports of their researches within the next three days, AEA chairman Prof Ranjith Wijewardena said.

The AEA Chairman was addressing a special awareness programme held by the AEA for fish importers to make them aware of the above issue along with the Health Ministry and Sri Lankan Customs. they also have taken measures to search each and every imported stock of canned fish.

"The final results of these experiments will give us a 100 percent correct result within three days,"Prof.Ranjith explained.

The first awareness programme for canned fish importers on this issue was held at the AEA Head Office Wellampitiya,recently.

They were given both theory and practical training.

They also discussed about the problems which canned fish importers have to face when importing fish from foreign countries.

Registered iced and canned fish importers, customs officers, food and medicine researchers and Health ministry officials participated in the programme.
