Met Dept predicts wet weather for another two days

The Met Department yesterday warned of the possibility of lightning
and strong winds within the next two days with the onset of the South
West monsoon although the intensity is likely to recede thereafter.
Duty meteorologist P G Yasarathne said thundershowers or showers can
be expected in many parts of Western,
Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and Galle and Matara districts. He
said thundershowers are expected in the South and the South Western
coast within the next 24 hours. Wind speeds will be between 40 to 50
km/h. “The wind speed may increase up to 60 to 70 km/h at times in the
South-Western, Southern, South - Eastern and the Gulf of Mannar sea,” he
added.
The Met Department requested fishermen in the Southern and Eastern
seas to exercise caution as the wind speed could increase.
The Disaster Management Centre said concurrent to the inclement
weather conditions, it has recognised Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya,
Kalutara, Galle and Matara as districts prone to landslides. According
to the Met Department the South Western Monsoon will prevail till
September. |
