Met Dept predicts wet weather for another two days

The Met Department yesterday warned of the possibility of lightning and strong winds within the next two days with the onset of the South West monsoon although the intensity is likely to recede thereafter.

Duty meteorologist P G Yasarathne said thundershowers or showers can be expected in many parts of Western,

Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and Galle and Matara districts. He said thundershowers are expected in the South and the South Western coast within the next 24 hours. Wind speeds will be between 40 to 50 km/h. “The wind speed may increase up to 60 to 70 km/h at times in the South-Western, Southern, South - Eastern and the Gulf of Mannar sea,” he added.

The Met Department requested fishermen in the Southern and Eastern seas to exercise caution as the wind speed could increase.

The Disaster Management Centre said concurrent to the inclement weather conditions, it has recognised Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Galle and Matara as districts prone to landslides. According to the Met Department the South Western Monsoon will prevail till September.
