Student assault case:

Principal released on bail

A Principal who allegedly punished a female student was ordered to be released on Rs 100,000 of two personal bonds and Rs 5,000 bail by Horana magistrate Mahinda Ranasingha yesterday. The magistrate also ordered the suspect not to threaten the witnesses.

The student, of Grade 10 and a resident of Pokunuwita were hospitalised after being allegedly punished by the Principal. She was discharged from Horana Hospital on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday around 9.30am when a female teacher allegedly complained to the Principal that the girl had called her names. The female teacher allegedly refused to accept any other views and insisted the girl was the offender.

The Principal had then beaten the girl's head on the wall and forced her to write a confession, the girl alleged.

The student said after the punishment, she was not allowed to go to the classroom and her parents admitted her to hospital due to vomiting. Horana Police are investigating.
