Cancellation of Asian Junior Athletic
Championship:
SL requests for inquiry
The Sri Lanka Athletic Association ( SLAA )
yesterday announced that the Asian Athletic Association ( AAA ) has
cancelled the 15th Asian Junior Athletic Championship in Colombo.
However, SLAA has taken immediate steps to request the Asian
Athletic Association to re-consider and make necessary arrangements
to hold the event as scheduled, according to Sports Ministry
sources. The announcement further stated that AAA secretary Maurice
R Nicholas had officially informed the SLAA yesterday morning that
the 15th Asian Junior Athletic Championship 2012, which had been
scheduled to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from June 09 to June 12
has been cancelled.

Cook and Bell seal England win over Windies
Alastair Cook and Ian Bell led England to
victory in the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s here on
Monday. England, set a target of 191 to win, were faltering at 57
for four before lunch on the fifth and final day. But Cook (79) and
Bell (63 not out) shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 132 that saw
England, the world’s number one ranked Test side, to the brink of
victory before left-handed opener Cook was out with two runs needed
when caught in the gully off West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

NSBA Championship from June 7
The Nationalized Badminton Association organized
Open Badminton Championship will be held from June 7 to 10 at Royal
College Sports Complex. The events to be worked off for are, boys
and girls under 11 and 13 singles and boys and girls singles and
doubles for under 15, 17 and 19. Veterans and masters men and women
singles, doubles and mixed doubles also will be played.
