Gurunagar housing scheme to be upgraded

The Gurunagar housing scheme in Jaffna will be modernized at a cost of Rs 70 million under the guidance of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa, said a ministry official.

The scheme was opened in 1994 and it was badly destroyed by the LTTE. It will be modernized after 18 years under the Nagamu Purawara programme of the Janasewana one million housing project.

The housing scheme consists of 160 houses of 435 square feet.


New lease of life

Young Men's Buddhist Association, Dehiwala has arranged to rescue 25 or more cattle from slaughter on June 4 Poson Poya Day.

This meritorious act has been organised by the association for the last 20 years.

The released cattle will be entrusted to farmers through the Grama Sevaka Niladari of the area.

Donors who wish to contribute can make donations to Sampath Bank - Dehiwala branch until the end of May. Contact 011-2723352 for details.

SAARC workshop

A SAARC workshop on Film vs Digital: The impending extinction of the celluloid cinema and the challenges ahead, will be held on May 18 at the Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka auditorium, 275/75, Prof Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, off Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

It is organised by the SAARC Cultural Centre, Colombo to mark the SAARC Film Festival 2012. The keynote address will be made by Philip Cheah of Singapore and eminent Sri Lankan personalities such as Dr. D B Nihalsingha, Chandran Rutnam and Vimukthi Jayasundara will also deliver speeches.

Lorry seized with arrack

Ahungalla police seized a lorry transporting forty bottles of arrack illegally with two persons on Galle Road at the Ahungalla police division during Vesak week. The suspects were produced before Balapitiya Magistrate Asanka Boderagama and fined Rs 30,000. The bottles of arrack were confiscated.


Bee-keeping promotion

The Sainthamaruthu Agrarian Service centre will launch a project to promote bee-keeping in the Sainthamaruthu divisional secretariat area in the Ampara district.

There is a big demand for bee honey in local and foreign markets. Arrangement have been made to provide bee keeping boxes, bee communities and technical instructions for farmers.


Fund raiser

Wilson Gunaratne’s Charitha Atak would go on boards at the Tower Hall on May 17 at 6.30 pm.

The play has been organized by Sri Lanka Ex-Naval Veteran Logisticians Association as a fund raiser project to implement the proposed welfare projects designed for the members and their families.

The story revolves around an aircraft which has been grounded for the past 64 years, unable to be airborne due to the obstacles to the development programmes. Wilson Gunaratne’s eight different characters would depict eight different national concepts. For enquiries: 0722251865, 0718468937


Benefit show

Helping the needy undergraduates of the Peradeniya University being the foremost priority of the Alumni of the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya 1960-1969, veteran filmmaker G D L Perera’s ‘Lakshmi, Maya and Sugath’ will be screened at the Sausiripaya, Wijerama Road, Colombo 7 at 6 pm on May 20.


Water cut

Water supply will be interrupted to the following areas in the Kandy district for eight hours from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on May 16 to facilitate urgent maintenance work at the Greater Kandy Water Treatment Plant, said the National Water Supply and Drainage Board yesterday.

The areas affected are Batugoda, Hapugoda, Bokalawala, Kahalla, Katugastota, Ambatenna, Balangoda, Nadayalatenna, Jayanthi Mawatha, Ukgalla, Kukulambewatte, Kalugammana, Dumbulwala, Barigama, Nugawela, Uladupitiya, Embulpuraya, Randadiya Mawatha, Wathuwala, Akurana, Kasawatta, Dunuwila Road and Thelambugahawatta.

Meanwhile, Water supply will be interrupted to the following areas for eight hours from 8 am to 4 pm on May 17 to facilitate urgent maintenance work, the NWSDB announced yesterday.

The areas affected are Matale town, Palapathwala, Rattota, Kaludewala, Ihala Harasgama, Kohobiliwala, Aluvihare and Wawinna.

The Old Peterites Group of ‘93/94 will hold their Annual General Meeting on May 18 from 6.30 pm onwards at the Sr. Flora Memorial Hall, St Peter’s College, Colombo 4. The AGM will be followed by a fellowship at the Old Boy’s Union Lounge.
