In a letter to the President, Democratic Left Front Secretary and
Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara declared his party indisputably believes
the implementation of the LLRC's recommendations could be possible only
through the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee and assured
his party's support for its establishment.
In his letter, the minister proposed that a committee be established
under a special convenor appointed by the President to present and
discuss other minor and sensitive issues which affect diverse ethnic
groups and that it could take place parallel to the implementation of
the other recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation
Commission.
He expressed this would prevent disturbing the on-going discussions
on the main issues and help resolve the day-to-day administrative issues
to the satisfaction of the respective communities and indicate to the
public that the government is sincerely committed to resolving the
problems of the diverse ethnic groups.
The letter denoted that a committee of this nature could enable
respective ministers or ministry officials to directly use their power
to discuss and resolve minor grievances and problems.
Minister Nanayakkara stated through a separate committee, the
government could immediately work on lighter issues pertaining to the
administrative sector such as the National Languages Policy.
This would help gratify the respective communities who present
grievances and build a close bonding with the government. |
