Wall collapses killing girl

A 17-year-old girl died and another was injured when a wall collapsed on to their bed at their home in Balapitiya, Ambalangoda on Monday.

Shakila Madushani and the other girl aged 12 were sleeping when the wall of their room collapsed around 1 am. Shakila succumbed to her injuries on admission to the Balapitiya hospital.

The other girl has been admitted to Karapitiya hospital.

Poice said the wattle and daub wall had crumbled due to inclement weather causing it to collapse.

Ambalangoda police are investigating.


Man dies after bike topples

A motorcyclist drowned when his bike fell into a canal after colliding with a culvert at the Dun Ella bridge in Mathugama on Sunday.

Priyantha Sirimal of Mahagama, had swayed on the road on his bike before hitting the culvert, police said.

The post-mortem revealed that he sustained injuries after the accident, and drowned in the canal.

Mathgama police are investigating.


CSD personnel’s body found

A Civil Security Department personnel's body was found entangled in Sevana Pitiya sluice gate in ZD canal in Welikanda on Monday.

He had been reported missing.

Police led investigations after a complaint by the victim's wife that her husband was missing.

Investigations revealed that D P Chaminda Sarath Kumara of Kolanawadiya, had fallen into the canal when the motorcycle he was riding hit a concrete pillar at the side of the canal the previous day.


Two die in road mishap

A man and a woman died and another was seriously injured in a three-wheeler and private bus collision at Dupiligoda in Mathugama on Monday.

All were admitted to Wettawa hospital where the woman succumbed to her injuries. The man who was transferred to the Nagoda hospital died on admission.

Mathugama police arrested the private bus driver.


Five injured in accident

Five passengers were injured when a private bus plying from Muttur to Colombo skidded and rolled over at Mahakade junction, Beligamuwa in Galewela yesterday morning.

The driver and the conductor were among the injured. They were admitted to Galewela hospital.


Four arrested for theft

Four suspects who had committed thefts in Nochchiyagama, Kalaththawa, Anuradhapura and Thambuththegama were arrested by Nochchiyagama police.

They had stolen petrol from a petrol station in Nochchiyagama and money, mobile phones and valuables from breaking into shops and houses.

Police said they have been charged on seven burglaries.

Some stolen goods were recovered from their possession. The suspects were produced before the Thambuththegama magistrate court yesterday.


Rs. 2 million stolen

Two suspects wanted for a robbery of over Rs 2 million were arrested at Kaleliya in Meerigama on Monday.

Police reported that the suspects, who are residents of Kaleliya and Weyangoda, allegedly robbed Rs 2,013,900 on March 21.

They were produced before the Aththanagalla Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
