Eco-friendly certification for Lankan exports mooted

Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that attention is being paid to make the eco -friendly certification compulsory for products exported from Sri Lanka. He observed that this move is necessary since eco -friendly certification has become compulsory for the majority of products in many countries around the world.

He observed that exports from Sri Lanka need to carry a green certificate to get a strong holding in the world market in the future. He observed that greenness has gained importance in the international market. The minister made these comments in a meeting with officials of the Ministry's Climate Change Secretariat.

The minister also observed that being eco - friendly does not only imply that the final product is environmental friendly, but, also the entire process of production should be environmental friendly. He also stated that Sri Lanka has already identified the need to reduce green house gas emissions and individual, group and industrial activities which contribute to global warming and climate change.

The minister had directed the Climate Change Secretariat to formulate long term policies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the country.
