The late Communist Party Leader Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe, was born on
April 13,1901, to a wealthy family in the village of Athuraliya in the
Matara District. He was named Sugeeswara Abeywardena Wickramasinghe.
He had his early education at the village school and later joined
Mahinda College, Galle for secondary education and from there he
proceeded to Ananda College, Colombo. He later entered the Colombo
Medical College from where he proceeded to England to earn his medical
degree.
Dr Wickramasinghe introduced the concept of socialism to Sri Lanka.
In 1931, he became a representative of the Legislative Council which was
the first occasion a member of the left movement became a member of an
administrative council. He dedicated himself for the cause of the down -
trodden masses. He devoted his life for social development, and
advocated the necessity of unity among all ethnic groups. Dr
Wickramasinghe passed away in the year1981.Floral tributes will be paid
to the late Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe at his statue on the Hakmana Road in
Matara on April 13, 2012 at 9.00 a.m.
Three wheeler collides with motorcycle
In a three wheeler – motorcycle collision at Illupaiyaddy junction,
the three-wheeler had lost control and crashed into a drapery shop
nearby. The driver of the three-wheeler was seriously injured, while the
motorcyclist had escaped with minor injuries. The Jaffna police are
investigating.
Annual general meeting
The Sri Lanka Naval Association will conduct its 32nd Annual General

Lecture
Former Director General of Archaeology Dr. Siran U. Deraniyagala will
deliver an illustrated lecture on “Pre - ehistoric man and their
environmental interaction”. The lecture under the auspicious of the
Wildlife and Nature Protection Society will be held on April 19 at 6 p.m
at the Institute of Engineers (Wimalasurendra Auditorium), No. 120/15.
Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07. The lecture is open to
the public and entrance is free.
Big onion farmers on study tour of India

Ten farmers engaged in big onion cultivation left on a study tour to
India, a ministry official said. “This tour has been organised by the
Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India on a concept of Agriculture
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane .”the official said.
He also said that the farmers will engage in field visits to big
onion farms in India. They will learn about new technologies relating to
cultivation, seed production, storage, post harvest handling of big
onion cultivation during the visit. The farmers will also participate in
a three day workshop.
“Bringing new technologies relating to big onion cultivation and
enhance big onion cultivation in Sri Lanka are the main objectives of
organizing this visit. The ministry plans to be self sufficient in big
onion and stop all big onion imports by the end of 2013,” the official
said. |
