Nipuna Rice Mills in Polonnaruwa has set up the first bio mass power
plant using Chaff with the help of the latest state-of-the art Japanese
technology.
Nipuna Rice Mills Chairman, Nipuna Gamalath told Daily News Business
that this Mega Watt two plant is sufficient to operate their rice mills
saving around Rs10 million a month.
The company has taken this measure to minimize the cost of production
and now is in the process of going for another expansion with an
investment around Rs 200 million. It will take another one- and- a-half-
years to install the plant and will be in operation in 2014.
The new plant will produce five mega watts and the company is
planning to use it for other purposes which will help to save more
energy cost.
Chaff can be used in an environment friendly manner to produce power,
saving a huge cost spent on electricity but it is only Nipuna rice mills
that make use of Chaff in a profitable manner and other rice mills throw
them out in the absence of technology.
Meanwhile, Nipuna Rice Mills recently has acquired the four star
hotel, Deer Park in Polonnaruwa with an investment of Rs 800 million.
Chairman Gamalth said that the hotel will be upgraded with a conference
hall, swimming pool and a new interior in the near future.
