Ceremonies to remember Jeyaraj

A series of ceremonies will be held in the Gampaha district tomorrow to mark the fourth death anniversary of Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.

The main ceremony will be held near the Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Memorial near Kanthi playground, Weliweriya, tomorrow at 8am at which his family members, Parliamentarians and friends will place floral tributes, said Parliamentarian Dr Sudarshani Fernandopulle.

ITN's live Poya programme Savanak Res will be telecast from Pothugal Viharaya, Heenatiyana on this day at which Ven Kotugoda Dhammavasa Anunayake Thera will deliver a special dhammadesana in memory of Minister Fernandopulle.

A dhamma discussion will follow. Two Christian memorial services will also be held.


Abandoned infant dies

An infant abandoned at a well at Kandanagoda on Tuesday died on admission to Nagoda Hospital.

A 17- year- old unmarried woman has been arrested for abandoning the one month old infant in a well in a paddy field close to her home. Neighbours found the baby and admitted it to Nagoda Hospital. Investigations revealed that the woman had an affair with a man from the same area. Dodangoda Police are investigating.


Bogus magistrate cum professor netted

Hanwella Police arrested a man in Colombo Fort who posed as a magistrate and a professor. The 32-year-old suspect is a resident of Kalubowila, Dehiwala. Police found fraudulant franks and printed letterheads under the name of Prof. M P Jayawardana Aththanayaka. They also seized four SIM cards in his possession. The suspect was to be produced in Awissawella magistrate's court yesterday. Hanwella Police are investigating.


Businessman arrested for breach of trust

The CID yesterday arrested a businessman with a brand new Toyota vehicle in connection with criminal breach of trust over Rs. 5.6 million.

CID Chief Inspector Merril Lamahewa who arrested the suspect with the vehicle in the Katugastota police area said that the suspect will be produced before the Negombo Chief Magistrate with a comprehensive report in connection with the CID investigation.


Caught with ganja bag

A suspect who had a bag containing 1,832,000 milligrams of ganja in his possession was arrested by officers of the Matara Police vice squad during a recent raid on a house in Matara following a tip off.

Police said the suspect sensing the arrival of the Police had loaded the ganja into a gunny bag and tried to escape from the back door when they apprehended him.

The suspect was on enlarged bail in a previous ganja case after being in remand custody for nearly one year. Investigations are continuing.


One dies in accident

A 22 year old motor cyclist died and two others were seriously injured when a van collided with two motor cycles at Pilana junction on the Galle - Akuressa main road on Tuesday.

Irosh Chaturanga of Welikatiya , Ankokkawila died in the incident. A man and the pillion rider on the other motorbike are being treated at Karapitiya hospital. The driver of the van has been arrested. Habaraduwa police are investigating.


Woman drowns in Seetha Gangula

A 22-year-old woman on pilgrimage to Sri Pada drowned while bathing in Seetha Gangula on Tuesday. The victim was identified as P A Inoka Priyadarshani of Waharaka, Ruwanwella. Her body was sent to the Erathna hospital morgue.


Man dies in jumbo attack

A 70-year old person died in an elephant attack at his land in Kuduwil in Damana yesterday.

The incident occurred when I Saul Hameed of Damana came out of his house around 2.30 am . Damana Police are investigating.


Two ganja dealers arrested

Ingiriya police arrested two ganja dealers in two raids on Tuesday. Police arrested one with 497grams of ganja. The suspect was about to sell it.

The other suspect was arrested with 5 grams of ganja in his possession. Both were residents of the Ingiriya area. The suspects were due to be produced before court.


Public Admin Secretary lauded

The All Ceylon Union of English Teachers (ACUET) has commended the decision by Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration P B Abeykoon to issue Public Administration circulars to all registered trade unions in the country. In a media release, Union's Secretary-General M A Stanley Perera asserts that nearly 1,005 recognized trade unions will benefit by this action related to administrative policies of the government.The ACUET is grateful to the Secretary of Public Administration for his timely and prompt action, the release states.


IT centres, libraries opening

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge will open computer centres and libraries in several schools in the Anuradhapura district today. The schools are Siyambalagaswewa MV, Ehetuwewa Vidaylaya, Endagala Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya and Thuruwila Vidyalaya.

The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation presents a well known lyric composer and poet W K Sarath Wimalasiri (Bank of Ceylon - Head Office) through Shraddhanjalee Programme from 12.00 pm to 12.45 pm on April 6 (Bak Full Moon Poya Day). He makes an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based on various themes that come in Buddhist Literature.


Easter dramas

The Ceylon Bible Society with the Children's Art Foundation(CHRAFT) will celebrate Easter with two children's dramas on Easter Monday,April 9 at 6 pm at the Christ Church Hall, Galle Face, Colombo 3.
