Plans to extend Colombo - Katunayake railway line
Plans are now under way to extend the Colombo-Katunayake railway line
for another 300 metres from the Katunayake station to the airport
premises.
The laying of the 300-metre track is estimated to cost Rs 30 million
and the construction of the railway station is estimated to cost Rs 40
million, said Transport Minister Kumara Welgama.
The project will be handled jointly by the Government Railways and
the airport planning division and the construction work will be handled
by the Railways, he said.
He said the extension of the railway line to the airport premises
will benefit both local passengers and tourists and help further boost
tourism in the country.
The minister further said that the Colombo-Katunayake railway line
has been developed as a double track up to Seeduwa and steps are under
way to extend the double track upto Katunayake soon.
