Illegal poultry farm causing health hazards

An illegal poultry farm and slaughtering house in Bingiriya, Dhalupothawatta is a public nuisance and a health hazard, according to residents.

The Provincial Environment Authority has not issued a licence but the farm has been running unlawfully without complying with the mandatory licence requirements that include the environment protection licence and PS licence.

Insurance for the farm has been denied due to environment pollution caused by it. There are 90 exhaust fans installed in the farm to release harmful emissions and the noise is causing a public nuisance and health hazards. There is no protective mechanism in place to purify these emissions.

The villagers have become victims to these harmful gases released from the farm and there have been incidents when some students of the Gamini Maha Vidyalaya located close to the farm had fallen ill.
