Zahira Rugby 7s:

Science College Cup Champions

Last year's runner up Science College, Colombo clinched the Cup Championship beating defending champions Vidyartha College, Kandy (33-5) in the final when the Zahira Rugby 7s' tournament concluded on a grand note at the Zahira College ground, Maradana yesterday.

Meanwhile the Plate Championship has been won by Ananda College, Colombo taming Kuchin Rugby Football Club Combined Schools team, Malaysia (19-10) and the Bowl Championship went on to Nalanda College, Colombo who defeated Kingswood College, Kandy (17-12) in the respective finals.

Lasindu Ishan of Science College who scored two tries in the Cup final was adjudged the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

Altogether 14 teams including two foreign teams participated in the tournament which has been conducted by the Zahira College old boys group of 60s' as a part of school's 120 anniversary celebrations.

Vidyarthians opened the account first in the Cup final with Ashan Bandara scoring their one and only try from the right corner which they did not convert successfully. Vidyarthians were in the front seat mid way (5-0). Isuru Viraj scored the first try for Science College in the second half after receiving the ball from Richard Dharmapala who did a superb run breaking Vidyartha defense. Science College took the lead with successful conversion (7-5). Soon Lasindu Ishan and Hashan Maduranga scored two quick try scores which they also added extra points. Vidyarthinas did not play well in the latter part and Lasindu and Richard added the final two try scores, bringing a comfortable victory to Science College.

Science college qualified for the Cup final by beating St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya (17-12) while Vidyarthinas defeated Isipathana College, Colombo (22-7) in the other semi final.

Kingswood College, Trinity College, St. Peter's College and Zahira College received special awards as pioneering rugby playing schools in the country.

Cup Championship - Winner - Science College - Colombo, runner up - Vidyartha College -Kandy

Plate Championship - Winner - Ananda College - Colombo, runner up - Kuchin RFC - Malaysia

Bowl Championship - Winner - Nalanda College, Colombo, runner up - Kingswood College - Kandy
