Request to conserve power during peak hours

The Power and Energy Ministry requests the public to conserve power during peak hours. Switching off one lamp during the peak time (6.30pm - 9.30pm) can save 180MW and 16.2 Gwh/ per month. Switching off a refrigerator during evening peak time hours can help conserve 214MW a month.

Peak demand saving due to shifting the ironing load to off peak times can help conserve 68MW per month. Due to the increase in fuel prices the cost incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board(CEB) for 2012 is Rs 127 million.

According to the Ministry of Power and Energy, the Ceylon Electricity Board estimated that prior to the increase in fuel prices, the fuel cost for 2012 is Rs 87 billion.

The additional cost borne by the CEB as a result of the increase in fuel prices is Rs 40 billion. The revenue anticipated by the adding of Fuel Adjustment Charge is Rs 28 billion. The normal selling price of a unit of electricity is Rs 13.37. However the CEB has to spend Rs 21.00 for the generating of a single unit of electricity


Wyawasaya-2012

The "Wyawasaya-2012" exhibition and get-together of businessmen and buyers organized by the Small Enterprise Development Division of the Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry will to be held from March 15 to 17 at the BMICH.

The opening ceremony will be held on March 15 at 10.00 am under the patronage of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

It will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm on the three days.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne and a number of politicians are expected to participate.


Couple die, daughters injured in crash

A man and his wife died while their two daughters were seriously injured in a three wheeler - private bus collision at Ranwala, Kegalle on Saturday.

B A Neil Pushpitha of Habudugala , Kegalle and his wife U Deepika succumbed to their injuries while their daughters aged 13 and eight who were in a critical condition, were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital and Kegalle Hospital.

The accident took place when the three wheeler with the four members from the same family collided with a private bus near the Ranwala Mahanaga School playground on the Colombo - Kandy main road in Kegalle.

Kegalle police arrested the private bus driver.


Crushed to death

A motorcyclist of Murasumodai was crushed to death under the wheels of a lorry plying between the Kilinochchi Kandasamy Kovil and Karadipokku junction opposite the Commercial Bank, on March 9. The accident took place while a motorcyclist tried to overtake a lorry where the road was being repaired.
