Germany to build child and maternity hospital in Galle

The German government has agreed to provide Euros 29 million to build a Child and Maternity Hospital at Karapitiya, Galle as a replacement for the Maramodara Hospital destroyed by 2004 tsunami, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena held discussions with the German government and obtained the financial assistance.

The Sri Lankan government will also contribute towards the project. The project commenced some time back with the financial assistance of Helmut Kohl Foundation, Germany which provided Rs. 3600 million.

But the project was halted due to problems of contractors.

Now there is a court case going on in connection with the project and the case to be ended by July this year.

Once the court case is closed the Health Ministry will re-commence the project with the assistance of German funds, he said.
