Davis Cup BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group II:

Thailand trounces Sri Lanka

Thailand player Weerapat Doakmaiklee offered a walkover after going down 6-4 in the first game to Sri Lankan number one Thangarajah Dineshkanthan, allowing the host country to grab their first and only victory in the Davis Cup BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group II tie which concluded at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) courts yesterday. Sri Lanka lost the tie to Thailand (4-1).

Thangarajah ready to hit back a receive from his Thai opponent Weerapat Doakmaiklee in the singles match

On the final day’s second single, local second seed Vimuktha de Silva went down to Thai player Sanchai Ratiwatana 7/6(4), 6/0. The two singles were played for the best of three games.

Local players were not able to live up to the expectations throughout the tournament and were defeated in the Saturday’s doubles match as well. Strong Thai pair Sanchai Ratiwatana and Weerapat Doakmaiklee found no trouble in taming local duo Thangarajah and Amresh Jayawickrema 6/0, 6/4, 6/2.

Sri Lanka will stand for their final test to remain in the Group II against Hong Kong when the tie works off in Hong Kong from April 6 to 8. If Sri Lanka lose the tie, they will be demoted to the Group III once again. Sri Lanka reached the Group II in six previous occasions in the Davis Cup BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania tournament but never has qualified for Group I.
