Harshini had learnt about the former cricket captain's 'Bikes for
Life' campaign through facebook. The campaign is aimed at raising money
to buy bicycles for conflict- affected families in rural areas in
Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Mankulam.
Harshini felt that these bicycles would be essential for children as
they would have a mode of transport to go to school.
After consulting OSC staff members about raising funds, Harshini
decided to go on a "sponsored silence". She did not speak until she
reached her goal of Rs. 25,000. She taped her mouth while on campus and
communicated using a small whiteboard and had a signboard around her
neck which announced her goal.
With the help of the OSC community, she reached?her goal within a few
days and collected Rs 100,000. Harshini then invited Sangakkara to OSC
to raise funds for his 'Bikes for Life' campaign.
Children from 43 nationalities represented at OSC welcomed the
cricketer who interacted with them.
Sangakkara expressed his gratitude to Harshini and OSC students and
staff for helping to raise funds for his 'Bikes for Life' campaign. |
