Minister intervenes to solve Mathagal people’s problems
Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister
Douglas Devananda has instructed officials to remove immediately the
earth bunds put up by the Armed Forces during the humanitarian operation
in Mathagal area.
The minister visited Mathagal and Marisankudal areas on February 3 to
look into the problems and demands of the people of the two areas.
Accordingly, the minister instructed officials to remove the earth
bunds put up by the Navy on the following day. He also said that he
would take action to remove the earth bunds in the other areas as well.
He also promised the people to provide them with electricity and other
facilities deemed necessary, in addition to releasing the Noonasai
College and other public buildings used by the Army, in the near future.
In response to the demands made by the people at this public meeting,
the minister assured the people that he would meet them with, in the
near future. For some of the demands the co-operation and assistance of
the people was necessary, he emphasized.
The people in Mathagal area had been displaced for the last 20 years
and more than 100 families had been resettled in these two places.
