Govt-TNA discussions on
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
TNA leader R. Sampanthan had said his party will take part in
discussions in connection with finding a solution to the issues of the
Tamil community. This is a positive sign, Cabinet Spokesman and Media
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Government
Information Department Auditorium yesterday, Minister Rambukwella said
that whatever solution worked out through these discussions should be
endorsed by Parliament.
“It is the last step in any solution. When the process of finding a
solution starts from Parliament it saves time.” According to Minister
Rambukwella the process of finding a solution to the Tamil issue was
always dragged on by the TNA and other groups in the past starting from
the ‘Thimpu Discussions’ and it is still dragging on. “We doubt whether
they are really interested in finding a solution or not. I always say
that the TNA should take part in discussions”, the minister added.
Minister Rambukwella pointed out that the government has serious
concerns about the distribution of police and land powers. This has
already been explained in Parliament by Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva. “The government can grant certain areas of police and land
powers”, he said.
