Moves to increase fish consumption
Ridma DISSANAYAKE
All measures are in place to increase the per capita fish consumption
in Sri Lanka to 22 kilograms from 11.4 kilograms. In the last two to
three years, the daily per capita fish consumption had increased, said
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.Rajitha
Senaratne.
The minister was addressing the opening ceremony of the 105th Ceylon
Fisheries Corporation (CFC) fish stall established in Dodangoda,
Kalutara, recently.
"Over Rs.1.5 million has been spent for the construction of each fish
stall and the entire cost is spent by the CFC without any financial
support from the Treasury. All arrangements have been made to achieve
our goal of 250 CFC fish stalls.
"Another 145 CFC fish stalls will be established in the country
before the end of this year," the minister said.
"After establishing all fish stalls, we will be deciding the fish
price and there is no space for black marketeers. At present, the CFC is
the main fish supplier for Sathosa outlets while supplying iced fish to
the 150 outlets out of the 225," he added. "Currently, there is peace
and freedom in the country which was not possible in the past years and
this has been a great support to achieve all aims.
"There is more opportunity to fulfill all responsibilities which are
in front of us and we should provide our assistance in development as
one nation without thinking about political parties or any other
differences," Minister Senaratne added.
