Over 25,000 to be trained as nurses in two years

The Ministry of Health has decided to recruit 25,000 women to be trained as nurses during the next two years.

Female students who have studied in the science stream at G.C.E (A/L) but failed to enter universities will be selected to be trained as nurses. They will be appointed to government hospitals in the island.

Dr. A.M. Priyadarshana, DMO in Kurunegala told the Daily News that Maithripala Sirisena, the Minister of Health has instructed top officials of the Health Ministry to prepare estimates and documents for the purpose.

"There is a huge demand for experienced Sri Lankan nurses in foreign countries.

Trainee-nurses will have chances to be employed in hospitals of other countries with high salaries and other privileges, Dr. Priyadarshana said.
