Measurement laboratory to be established in Pitipana

The government has decided to construct a new state-of-the-art
measurement laboratory in Pitipana, Homagama at a cost of Rs.1,985
million.
This is the first national laboratory with advanced and sophisticated
technology in South Asia,Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister
Johnston Fernando told the Daily News.
The Cabinet has already given approval for this project.
A new training centre, administrative unit with accommodation
facilities for staff will also be constructed in a new laboratory
building complex.
Services such as identifying fraudulent measuring equipment,
regulating measuring equipment for industries and providing credible and
traceable calibration services to the country through implementing and
administering the laws and regulations assigned to it will be carried
out at the proposed laboratory.
Realization, establishment, maintenance and dissemination of national
measurement standards of the country, maintenance of the national
measurement system of units of the country, developing regional and
international co-operation in the field of meteorology, providing
advisory services to required organizations, prevention of violation of
measurement law of the country by way of conducting inspection and
raids, registration of manufacturers, repairers and sellers of measuring
devices and providing calibration facilities to leading laboratories in
the country are other functions of the new laboratory.
