Public servants have right to pinpoint shortcomings

Public servants have the right to pinpoint shortcomings of the government, Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne said.

He was addressing the employees of the Prime Minister's office before starting work for 2012 yesterday.

"Public servants have the responsibility of implementing government policies on development initiatives.

"They are legally bound to implement the government's plan without criticizing them", he added.

"The divisions which are detrimental to the smooth functioning of the country should be abandoned by the public servants.

He said that public service depends on the middle class. They play a decisive role in terms of development.

The salary of the public servants is derived through tears and sweat of the people.

Public property should be preserved for the next generation without being harmed, he said.
